... What a diff'rence a day makes …
Remember the song?
Like me, you can probably recall that first line, then hum the next couple of lines to yourself.
But maybe you remember the punchline - …and the diff'rence is you!
And those opening and closing lines, it strikes me, fit Billy and Cody's story to perfection.
Only three weeks ago, you'll recall, Cody was for all practical purposes (and, believe me, I had plenty of them in mind!) unattainable.
He was the boy who - unlike his best friend Billy - had never succumbed to my temptations (or, more to the point, my wallet)…
Until, that is, he got gradually drawn into that photoshoot I've already told you about and afterwards, with the promise of even greater rewards to come, far more than just that - though, sadly, off-camera.
What a diff'rence a day makes, indeed!
Of course, the difference, in this particular case, wasn't made by you but by two.
In other words it had needed the fact that it was doing something with his lifelong buddy to persuade Cody to join our club.
But, I have to tell you now, having joined up just three weeks ago, Cody now looks well on track to seizing the club presidency come the next election.
That kid has just gone wild!
He's certainly lost all his previous inhibitions about getting naked, for instance.
Let me prove my point.
Just the other day I took the two of them to a nearby lake for some swimming and sunbathing.
It was just for a day out, really - and a bit of a reward too for all their hard work over the past three weeks.
But, of course, as I always do, I took my camera along with me.
And it was just as well that I did.
Because all Cody's modesty had gone out of the window for good (and, of course, Billy had never had any at all in the first place!)
The two boys loved playing about in the water.
The lake was normally too far for them to get to unless one of their older friends offered them a ride in a car.
But after an hour or so of fun and games they were feeling a little chilly - and adopted their best acting pose for the camera to show it! - so they decided to get out of the water.
They sat down on the bank of the lake. They looked innocent enough. But I could tell that something was brewing - and that I'd soon be glad I'd brought the camera along with me. It didn't take long to start. I don't know whether this was acting - or whether, somehow, the strong friendship the boys had had for each other over nearly twenty years had passed over some invisible yet definite dividing line into something far deeper. I don't know - and somehow I don't think you'd have appreciated it if I'd stopped them to ask the question. By the end of the afternoon I genuinely felt that nothing about these two kids could surprise me any longer. Just three weeks ago one of them hadn't even been prepared to take off his underwear in front of a camera. While just 21 days later they were prepared, in front of my lens, to do this… And this… Looking back to when I was a teenager, I can remember how everything seemed faster then, more exciting, more of an adventure. Maybe that's how it is with Billy and Cody. They're living life to the full… Trying out new experiences… And enjoying every new day of it, just as it comes.
